New to rideshare? Renewing your documents? Toronto drivers generally need an annual vehicle inspection and an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate that meets platform requirements.

  • New driver inspections — get the safety documentation needed for your application.
  • Annual renewals — plan ahead so an expired certificate doesn't interrupt your work.
  • DriveON documentation — after a passing inspection, use the official certificate for your Uber or Lyft upload.
  • Before-you-visit guidance — call us to discuss inspection availability and what to bring.

Buying, Selling or Registering a Vehicle?

A Safety Standards Certificate may be needed when a used vehicle changes owners or comes into Ontario from another province or country. Our inspection service helps you take the next step with confidence.

  • Used-vehicle ownership transfers
  • Out-of-province vehicle registration
  • Changing a vehicle from “unfit” to “fit”
  • Other Ontario registration situations requiring an SSC

Used-car buyers

Before You Buy,
Know What You're Buying.

A used car can look great on the outside and still need expensive repairs. A pre-purchase inspection helps identify visible mechanical concerns, wear and service needs so you can make a more informed decision.

Good to know: A pre-purchase assessment and an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate are different services. Ask us which inspection is appropriate for your vehicle.

What gets looked at

Vehicle Safety Is More
Than a Checklist.

Ontario inspections assess key systems and components against the applicable provincial standards.

01Brakes & parking brake
02Tires & wheel condition
03Steering & suspension
04Lights & signals
05Windshield, glass & wipers
06Seat belts & doors
07Exhaust & leaks
08Body & structural condition

These are common inspection areas, not an exhaustive official inspection checklist. The applicable DriveON standard determines the full requirements.

Helpful answers

Safety Inspection FAQs.

Not sure what you need? Give us a call and explain your situation.

How long is an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate valid?

A regular Ontario Safety Standards Certificate is valid for 36 calendar days after the inspection. Plan your registration or document submission before it expires.

Do Uber and Lyft drivers need a new inspection every year?

For Toronto rideshare driving, annual inspections are generally required. Certain high-mileage thresholds or local rules can require an earlier inspection. Check the current requirements in your driver app and call us to discuss your vehicle.

What happens if my vehicle does not pass?

A certificate cannot be issued until the vehicle meets the applicable Ontario safety standard. We can explain the issues identified and discuss repair options. Repairs and reinspection, if required, are separate from an automatic pass.

Is a pre-purchase inspection the same as a safety certificate?

No. A pre-purchase inspection is a vehicle-condition assessment intended to help you make an informed buying decision. An official Safety Standards Certificate requires the applicable DriveON inspection and a passing result.

Do I need a safety certificate to sell or transfer a used car?

For many used vehicle transfers in Ontario, a certificate is needed before the new owner can obtain plates. Exemptions exist, including some spouse transfers. Call and tell us your situation so we can help you identify the right service.

How much does the inspection cost?

Inspection prices depend on the inspection type and vehicle. Call (416) 752-5823 for current pricing and availability. Any repairs needed to meet the standard are discussed separately.
